If Square did bring FFXIV to iOS/Mac with a full port (like EvE just did) I’d be logging in more often. I kinda have to admire CodeWeavers’ dedication trying to crack this particular nut. I was more poking fun at calling a translation layer for the Windows binary a port. I think people would pay to be able to play on the go with a tablet (even if it’s just farming stuff or doing light content). If they did that, they could expand the game’s market to iPad.

I just wish they would upgrade the engine or even do a proper, native port. Codeweavers also did some work getting DXVK working at a time when it couldn’t work at all on stock Crossover, so they deserve credit for that. The previous port, which was Cider-based, hitched like crazy and was unplayable (and that was apparently after it was pulled and “fixed”). It’s as much as one as the old Cider ports were. Since I was upgrading to 32GB anyways, the standard config with the Max tempted me (and was still in budget). I expect it to be overkill for my needs, to be honest. Need to do some work in Affinity to see how well the GPU holds up next. This is probably the first laptop in a long while that I’d be happy to use as a desktop replacement, let alone the fact that I could get a good chunk of work done unplugged rather than running it down in 3-4 hours. Again, no fan noise, and the battery could probably get me through an 8 hour shift of work or close to it. Not like it was a slouch before (unlike Android’s emulator), but it is noticeably more performant for me.

The iOS Simulator is noticeably more performant as well. But having my project go from taking a few seconds to incrementally build and run, to under 2 seconds, making it about as fast to build/run as launching an app feels strange. The project I was working with wasn’t too complicated, but the 2X faster than the i9 MBP seems right. The thing that stood out was just how noticeably fast Xcode was compared to the Intel 16”. Messing around with one of my personal projects in Xcode, web browsing, mixed stuff. Spent 15% of the battery doing some assorted things for about 2 hours unplugged last night. This means I can do some gaming or coding on the couch without being disruptive.

The thing that impressed me the most is that even with the M1 Max, nothing I cared about spun up the fans, and the chassis never got as hot as my base model 16” Intel MBP. Games like Stellaris, Minecraft, and Worms WMD. I did play around a bit with a couple of games, just to see how things fared, but I don’t do a ton of gaming on the Mac. Is it even a port if they are throwing it into CrossOver though?

The Mac port of FF XIV is just really bad (but better than it used to be).
